The McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine faculty member Freddie Fu, M.D., professor and chairman of orthopaedic surgery, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, was among faculty, staff, and students of UPMC and the University of Pittsburgh Schools of the Health Sciences recently recognized by academic and scientific societies and other prestigious organizations for their significant achievements and exceptional leadership.
Dr. Fu was named Honorary Member of the Chilean Society of Orthopaedics and Traumatology at the 43rd Chilean Meeting of Orthopaedics and Traumatology in Vina Del Mar, Chile. The distinction is given to visiting professors who contribute to the knowledge and development of Chilean orthopaedic surgeons.
Dr. Fu joined the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine faculty in 1982 as an assistant professor of orthopaedic surgery and director of sports medicine. He became clinical vice chairman of the department of orthopaedic surgery in 1990 and executive vice chairman in 1994. Dr. Fu was also instrumental in the establishment of the Sports and Preventive Medicine Institute in 1985. Under Dr. Fu's medical directorship over 12 years, the facility - now called the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center for Sports Medicine - has grown into and remains one of the world's largest, most comprehensive and highly regarded sports medicine centers. He also was instrumental in the establishment of the University of Pittsburgh's Sports Medicine Fellowship Program, which in the past 12 years has attracted more than 100 surgeons who travel from all over the world to learn surgical techniques and conduct research with Dr. Fu and his colleagues in the department of orthopaedic surgery and UPMC's Musculoskeletal Research Center.
Dr. Fu is known worldwide for his pioneering surgical techniques to treat sports-related injuries to the knee and shoulder and his extensive scientific and clinical research in the biomechanics of such injuries. He performs surgery at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and sees patients at the Center for Sports Medicine. Because of his reputation, Dr. Fu attracts both athletic and non-athletic patients from all over the globe and has been featured in several publications. He is also the editor of 12 major orthopaedic textbooks and author of 60 book chapters on the management of sports injuries. He has contributed to more than 150 international research publications and has given more than 400 national presentations to his peers. As a former president of the Pennsylvania Orthopaedic Society, he still remains a member of 40 other professional and academic medical organizations.
